DIY Herringbone Concrete Makeover

This post contains affiliate links, to items I am in love with, and I am confident you will too!

I have been dreaming of making over our small concrete slab off our breezeway for over a year!! We had considered painting the concrete, adding stone, or adding thin bricks, but when I heard about Cutting Edge Stencils from my friend Sarah (@dreamingofhomemaking), I knew I had to give them a try. I loved their herringbone brick pattern and thought it would work perfect for our space. The best part about this stencil is that it can be used on walls, floors or even as a backsplash.

To start, we power washed and cleaned the area.

I then added the base coat of paint (BEHR Porch & Patio/Floor - White Cloud). TIP: Apply two coats of base paint.

For the accent color, I wanted something neutral that would go with our Bedford stone home so I selected Smokestack (BEHR Porch & Patio/Floor paint). I also wanted the overall design to resemble real brick so I started the process by stenciling (sideways) to create straight faux bricks to outline the herringbone design.

Next, I made sure the middle "peak" was centered with the door (see below). This step is important for making sure the herringbone design is centered with the concrete and outline.

Next, I just worked my way down and around to finish the project. The products from Cutting Edge Stencils are well made and the overall process was very easy!

I do recommend taping the edges with painters tape to hold the stencil in place. I also used small amounts of paint on the stenciling brush so there were no paint bleeds. You can always go back with your base paint to touch up as needed though.

Overall, I am THRILLED with the results of this stenciling project!!! It makes such a difference to our outdoor space. Since this DIY was such a success, I plan to also stencil our concrete walkway on the other side of our home.

I hope you found this DIY helpful! I loved the results from this project and couldn't wait to share with you!
