As many of you know, we have been renovating our 1970's home since late spring. Now that the interior of the home is nearly finished, we've started to focus on the exterior and enhancing the curb appeal. Our first project was to replace and update our mailbox and we quickly moved on to a mini-barn makeover. We also took down another barn on the property that was too far gone to save.
My friend Kayla from Plum Pretty Decor & Design recently shared her DIY: Faux Carriage Style Garage Doors and it inspired me to tackle our own garage door project. I'm so excited to share the process and before/after photos with you!
Here is our "before" photo. Our garage door was very plain and my goal for this project was to increase the curb appeal. The main part of our house is Bedford stone and this area just didn't seem to "go" with the rest of our home.
The DIY carriage door project was one of the easiest we have tackled so far. We partnered with Coach House Accents and selected their signature decor windows (set of 2) in white as well as the traditional series garage door hinges and handles. To read more about their company click here.
The simulated windows were so easy to install and within a few hours we had started to transform our garage door. Prior to install, I did measure and lay everything out so we had a plan for how we wanted the windows to look. As the directions recommended, we started from the middle and worked our way out.
We have a two-car garage and since the signature decor windows come in a set of two, we ordered two sets. You can see the total of four windows below was a perfect fit for our garage.
Since we were going for a carriage style door look, we also added hinges and handles. I was so glad that Coach House Accents offered mountable options. It is so nice to have peace of mind that these will remain beautiful for years to come. The products are extremely durable and we love that they are made in the U.S.A.
This was quite a transformation, wouldn't you agree? Here's a before/after for reference.
We were thrilled with this transformation and lived with the new DIY carriage doors for a few days, but I kept going back to Kayla's blog post about how she actually painted her garage doors too. Our home is mainly Bedford stone, but when we moved into our home last spring, we painted a portion of the exterior (next to the windows) in Graystone by Benjamin Moore.
I told my husband I wanted to add some accent paint to our new DIY carriage style garage door to coordinate with the rest of our home, but since we already had the hinges screwed into the garage (to paint, we would need to lower the bottom hinges), he advised me to just leave well enough alone. It did look great so I left everything alone...for a few days :)
I ended up painting the door next to our garage in our leftover Graystone paint and loved it so much I decided to ahead and remove the bottom hinges (they would have to be screwed in lower and old holes filled) and paint our garage door too. I did run this by my husband and he agreed we should go ahead after seeing the regular door painted. I used FrogTape so I would have crisp, clean paint lines.
In true Amy fashion, once I started, I didn't want to stop so I worked well into after dark. Here was a progress picture with the paint still wet.
I was so excited to wake up this morning, remove the tape and see the results. The paint just added to the DIY carriage door style and I LOVE how it turned out!
Could we have stopped after applying the signature decor windows and traditional series garage door hinges and handles? Sure! For our home though, I felt like to balance the exterior spaces, we needed to add the accent paint.
Overall, we love how this DIY project upgraded the look of our plain garage door into a beautiful custom carriage door look. Not to mention, it upped our curb appeal at a fraction of the cost!!
If you are looking for an easy and affordable way to add instant curb appeal to your home, I would highly recommend the Coach House Accents products! We've been very pleased and had so many neighbors comment on how great they look.
As always, thanks for stopping by the blog and following along on our renovation journey.
Xx,
Amy
