Homemade French Boule Bread

Thank you for your interest in trying our homemade French Boule bread! Mat has spent countless hours perfecting his French breads so you can be assured this a tried and true recipe. Definitely a family favorite of ours! 

Here's what you'll need: 

  • 1.5 cup warm water
  • 1 packet yeast
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 4 tbl salt
  • Cornmeal 

Step 1:

Combine water, yeast and honey. Let activate til foamy.

Step 2:

Add bread flour and salt. Incorporate ingredients with spatula. Mix with bread hook for 5 minutes. Grease bowl and place dough in - it will be quite wet. Let rise overnight. Punch down and let double again.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Make sure Dutch oven is preheated thoroughly.

Step 3:

Turn dough out onto well floured countertop and form into a boule. Dust with cornmeal and place on parchment paper. Place in Dutch oven and cook 30 minutes COVERED.

Step 4:

Remove lid, increase temperature to 450 degrees, and cook for 20 minutes additional or until loaf reaches deep golden brown.

  • Your recipe calls for 4 tbl. of salt. Tbl. usually means tablespoon. 4 tablespoons of salt is WAY too much salt. Maybe this was a misprint? I cut back to 2-3 tablespoons and bread still too salty

  • Yes, of course you can Shannon. A Le Creuset cast iron pot is a Dutch oven.

  • Do you think this would work with a Crueset-type dutch oven? Or only cast iron?
